From Alexander Hamilton to George Washington, [11 April 1792]

To George Washington

[Philadelphia, April 11, 1792]

Mr. Hamilton presents his respects to the President. Herewith are testimonials in favor of two candidates for the Office of Treasurer of the Mint, Wm. A McCrea1 who has been mentioned by Mr. Foster2 of the Senate, and James Abercrombie3 who is recommended by a number of respectable characters.

1. McCrea, a resident of Delaware, applied for appointment as treasurer of the Mint on March 27, 1792. His letter of application, supported by nine letters of recommendation, is described in Hunt, Calendar of Applications description begins Gaillard Hunt, Calendar of Applications and Recommendations for Office During the Presidency of George Washington (Washington, 1901). description ends , 80. McCrea, however, did not receive the appointment, and on April 11, 1792, the day on which H wrote this letter to Washington, he was appointed a surgeon’s mate in the Army (Executive Journal, I description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate (Washington, 1828). description ends , 119).

2. Theodore Foster was a Senator from Rhode Island.

3. Abercrombie, like McCrea, failed in his application for appointment as treasurer of the Mint. In 1793 he was an unsuccessful applicant for appointment as naval officer at Philadelphia (Hunt, Calendar of Applications description begins Gaillard Hunt, Calendar of Applications and Recommendations for Office During the Presidency of George Washington (Washington, 1901). description ends , 1).
