1. According to Philip Marsh (“Hamilton’s Neglected Essays, 1791–1793,” The New-York Historical Society Quarterly, XXXII [October, 1948], 289), “The writer … [of this unsigned communication to the Gazette of the United States] sounds very like Hamilton.” No conclusive evidence, however, that H was its author has been found.
