The [New York] Independent Journal: or, the General Advertiser, February 2, 1788. This essay appeared on February 5, 1788, in New-York Packet, and on February 6, 1788, in The [New York] Daily Advertiser. In the McLean description begins The Federalist: A Collection of Essays, Written in Favour of the New Constitution, As Agreed upon by the Federal Convention, September 17, 1787. In Two Volumes (New York: Printed and Sold by J. and A. McLean, 1788). description ends edition this essay is mistakenly numbered 69, in the newspapers it is numbered 48.

1. The authorship of this essay has been disputed. However, because H himself attributed it to James Madison, it has not been included in these volumes. For a discussion of the dispute over its authorship, see “The Federalist. Introductory Note,” October 27, 1787–May 28, 1788.
