Appointment as Delegate to the Continental Congress

Poughkeepsie, New York, July 22, 1782. On this date the New York legislature passed the following resolution: “Resolved, That the Honorable James Duane, William Floyd, John Morin Scott, Ezra L’Hommedieu and Alexander Hamilton, Esquires, be, and are hereby declared duly nominated and appointed Delegates, to represent this State in the United States in Congress assembled, for one Year, from the first Monday in November next ensuing.”1

1. On July 22, the Senate nominated a delegation consisting of James Duane, William Floyd, Philip Schuyler, John Morin Scott, and Ezra L’Hommedieu. Although the Assembly nominated four of the same men, it substituted H for Schuyler. At a joint meeting of the two houses a ballot was taken and H was nominated (New York Senate Journal description begins Journal of the Senate of the State of New York (Publisher and place vary, 1782–1786). description ends , 1782, 91). H’s credentials were dated October 25, 1782.
