1. Arnold was at this time in Providence, Rhode Island. On May 2, 1777, Arnold was promoted to the rank of major general. On August 8, 1777, he was given a new commission which stated that his rank of major general was to date from February 19, 1777. This new commission restored his seniority in rank.
