Nicholas Cruger to Hans Buus, 18 March 177[2]

Nicholas Cruger to Hans Buus1

[St. Croix] March 18, 177[2].2 Is “glad to find my Clerk in my absence has desird you to take all my affairs in your hands that was in Mr. Hassells,3 who I am confident has been very negligent in them and triffled away a good deal of money to no purpose.” Then discusses various cases for which Buus will be responsible.

LC, in writing of H, Hamilton Papers, Library of Congress.

1In MS, name is spelled Boos. This is incorrect; see The Royal Danish American Gazette, March 9, 1771; July 7, 1773; October 9, 1776; and St. Croixian Pocket Companion (Copenhagen, 1780), 5.

2MS incorrectly dated 1771.

3There were several Hassells (or Hassels) living on St. Croix at this time. This is probably a reference to Gerhard Hassel, who is mentioned as “procurator” in 1777 (The Royal Danish American Gazette, June 25, 1777).
