Dumas to the American Commissioners, 12 May 1778: résumé
Dumas to the American Commissioners6
ALS: American Philosophical Society
<The Hague, May 12, 1778, in French: I shall not speak of my compliance with your orders of April 30 until I have more to tell. Your sealed letter I have been unable to present because a wind from the west prevented me.7 I have persuaded my friends to send a single ship to America, uninsured to preserve secrecy, and have promised to recommend them.8>
[Note numbering follows the Franklin Papers source.]
6. Published in Taylor, Adams Papers, VI, 109–11.
7. The sealed letter was presumably that to the Grand Pensionary (above, April 10), and the wind from the west was pressure from the French embassy.
8. The friends were De la Lande and Fynje; see the note on Dumas’ letter above, March 3.
