To John Canton3
AL: The Royal Society
Tuesday [1757–1772]4
Mr. Franklin’s Compliments to Mr. Canton, and requests he would procure for him two more of the long Glass Tubes such as he formerly did him the favour to procure for him.
[Note numbering follows the Franklin Papers source.]
3. On John Canton, electrical experimenter, see above, IV, 390 n.
4. This note might have been written at virtually any time before Canton’s death, March 22, 1772, except, of course, during one of BF’s journeys away from London or during his return to Philadelphia, August 1762–December 1764. Possibly BF’s reference to himself as “Mr.” places the note before he received his honorary doctorate at the University of St. Andrews, Feb. 12, 1759. His “Account of Expences” contains no entry to help in the dating.
