1. Sampson Darrell (d. 1777) was sheriff of Fairfax County, and GW carried for the sheriff £30 in paper currency and £55.6.11 in gold to Robert Carter Nicholas, the colonial treasurer in Williamsburg (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 236).

2. This may be the wife of the overseer of River farm, James Cleveland. Mrs. Washington’s two children had remained at Mount Vernon during the five-week absence of their mother and stepfather.

3. This may be the Henry Self whose estate was inventoried in Fairfax County in 1776, after his death. GW lists a fourth Sarah, at River farm, in his Memorandum: List of Tithables, c.20 June 1768.

4. Frazier’s ferry crossed the Mattaponi.

5. The Virginia Gazette (Purdie and Dixon; Williamsburg) reported on 29 Oct. 1767: “On Thursday last Valiant Tryall, the property of the Hon. William Byrd, Esq; won the 100£ purse at the race ground near this city, with great ease, against Col. [John] Baylor’s horse Britannicus, and Young Briton, belonging to the estate of the Hon. Philip Ludwell, deceased.”
