AD, ViLxW: Washington’s Account Book. GW wrote across facing pages the heading “April General Court 1762” and found room for the short account headed “The Estate of Daniel Parke Custis Esqr. deced” and the guardian account headed “Mr John Parke Custis” (doc. III). He had to move to the next facing pages to copy the guardian account headed “Miss Martha Parke Custis.” The commissioners’ report for all the accounts is written across this second set of facing pages.

This has not been identified.

For reference to the tobacco lost in the Cary, see GW to Robert Cary & Co., 8 Oct. 1760, n.1.

Thomas Hornsby (d. 1772) was an Englishman who had become a successful merchant in Williamsburg.

The Custis estate held Edward Pye Chamberlayne’s promissory note dated 28 June 1756 for £12 current money. See doc. III-B, in Settlement of the Daniel Parke Custis Estate, 20 April 1759–5 Nov. 1761.
