2. GW sold Harry Piper twenty hogsheads of tobacco, which included nine of overseer Richard Stephens’s crop, eight of overseer Christopher Hardwick’s crop of fifteen hogsheads, and one hogshead each from renters John Gist, William Nations, and Thomas Petit (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 103–4). On 10 Aug. 1760 GW explained to Richard Washington that he had sold all of his Potomac tobacco locally.

4. GW records having paid William Digges, of Warburton Manor, Md., £14 “at your own House” for “8000 Weight of Hay” received on 15 Feb. 1760 (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 101).

5. David Craig died intestate in Fairfax County early in 1760 or late in 1759, leaving a sizable estate.

6. John Mercer was among the defendants in Clifton’s suit in the General Court.

7. This was probably Henry Wisheart, a merchant of Loudoun County.

8. Robert Cunningham was probably the man who lived east of Mills Gap in Frederick County. He was undoubtedly being paid for supplies or services furnished the army.

9. The artisan Jeremiah Mitchell received £21.16.6 from GW on 1 Dec. 1760 for ninety-seven days of work rebuilding GW’s mill (ibid., 102).

10. On 20 Mar. Boston was subjected to “the most terrible Fire that has happened in this Town, or perhaps in any other Part of North-America.” Although there was no loss of life nearly four hundred homes and businesses were destroyed, and estimates of damages went as high as £300,000 sterling. The legislature instructed Gov. Thomas Pownall to send briefs throughout the colonies for contributions for the homeless and for burned-out businesses (Pennsylvania Gazette [Philadelphia], 3 April 1760).

11. Hosea Bazell worked on GW’s millrace, and on 21 Sept. 1760 he received from GW £2.8.9 for 32½ days work (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 102).
