From Thomas Jefferson

[Philadelphia, 22 February 1793]1

Th: Jefferson with his respects to the President, incloses him a letter he received from Mr Short yesterday, by which he expected to leave the Hague on the 12th of December:2 also the answers he has prepared to the two petitions from Post Vincennes.3

1. Tobias Lear’s docket on the receiver’s copy indicates that this letter was written on “22d Feby 1793.”

2. William Short, the U.S. minister to The Hague, discussed U.S. relations with France, Spain, and the Netherlands in his letter to Jefferson of 8 Dec. 1792 (Jefferson Papers, description begins Julian P. Boyd et al., eds. The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. 41 vols. to date. Princeton, N.J., 1950–. description ends 24:708–13). Short did not leave Amsterdam until 19 Dec., and he arrived at Madrid on 1 Feb. 1793 (Short to Jefferson, 18 Dec. 1792, 3 Feb. 1793, ibid., 751–52, 25:139–42).
