Charlottesville 9th. April 1827.

Dear Sir

Annexed I send you the copy of a letter just received from the 2. Auditor in relation to the loan of $25000. asked for the University,1 my letter to the President & Directors of the Literary fund of the 30th. ult, was written by direction of Genl. Cocke and I was further directed, that, in case, the board should decline the loan, then to open a negociation with some one of the banks in Richmond, Very Respectfully Sir Your Most Obt. St.

1Garrett enclosed a copy of J. Brown Jr. to Garrett, 7 Apr. 1827, responding to Garrett’s 30 March letter requesting from the president and directors of the Literary Fund a loan to the University of Virginia authorized by the last session of the legislature. Brown wrote that due to a “very small balance in hand in the Treasury,” such a loan was not possible (ViU: Special Collections, Madison Papers).
