To Samuel Powel

[c.June 1787]

Genl Washington presents his Compliments to Mr Powell and would, with much pleasure, dine with him on Thursday next, had he not been previously engaged to Mr Rutledge.

AL, ViMtvL.

GW indicates in his diary while in Philadelphia the person or persons with whom he had dinner on every Thursday except one, and John Rutledge is not named. On the one Thursday, 7 June, that GW did not have his dinner at someone’s house, he “Dined with a Club of Convention Members at the Indian Queen” (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 5:166).
