9. While in Frederick County GW on 7 Mar. was at his “Brothers all day writing Instructions & dispatches for Captn. Crawford the Surveyor of our 200,000 Ac[re]s of Land.” He did not finish the task until 9 Mar., when he gave the “dispatches” to Crawford’s half brother, Marcus Stephenson (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. 10. GW wrote in his diary on 13 Mar. of “being obliged to Ferry over goose Creek at [John] Houghs Mill” in Loudoun County on his return home (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The “Peyton’s” where GW stayed on the twelfth of course was not Yelverton Peyton’s ordinary on Aquia Creek in Stafford County where he frequently stopped on his way to Fredericksburg. GW must have been at the house of Yelverton Peyton’s brother, Col. Francis Peyton (d. 1781), a justice of Loudoun County, or one of his other brothers who lived in the area. Francis Peyton lived on the road to Vestal’s ferry.

11. “Talbots” may have been the place either of John Talbot (died c.1789) in Loudoun County, or of Benjamin, Daniel, or Samuel Talbot of Fairfax County, all of whom voted for GW in the 1768 election. See Fairfax County Poll Sheet, 1 Dec. 1768.

12. On 25 Feb. Benjamin Buckler, “late of the Provence of Maryland but now of Fairfax County in Virginia,” entered an agreement with GW to work for him as a carpenter from that date until 25 Dec. 1771 in return for the use of a house, 300 pounds of pork, 3 barrels of corn, and £25 current money (DLC:GW). Buckler signed with his mark.

13. After buying on 18 Dec. 1770 from Valinda Wade her half of an undivided 193–acre tract on Dogue Run at Mount Vernon, GW sought to buy the other half owned by her nephew William Barry or to secure the riparian rights to the stream for the mill that he was building. The nephew’s father, John Barry, refused to sell or to consent to a division of the property. At the Fairfax County court that met 18–22 Mar. 1771, GW registered the deeds that he had from Valinda Wade and retained two lawyers, Robert Hanson Harrison and William Ellzey, to bring suit against the Barrys to force a division of the Wade tract. When the case came to trial in August 1772, the court ordered the county surveyor to make the division that GW asked for (see Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds.
