AD, DLC:GW, General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 333, 335.

With this payment Hector Ross settled his account with GW (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 327).

For the levy on those officers entitled by Dinwiddie’s Proclamation of 1754 to a share of 200,000 acres allotted to the Virginia Regiment, see the Minutes of the Meeting of the Officers of the Virginia Regiment of 1754, 5 March.

On 1 Dec. 1767 GW leased to Alexander Fryer one half of the 453–acre tract in Frederick County for which GW had received a grant from Lord Fairfax on 20 Oct. 1750 (Frederick County Deed Book, 12:223–26, ViWnFreCh). Under the terms of the lease, Fryer was to begin payment of rent on 1 Dec. 1770, and GW records in March receiving from Fryer £6.15 “of my Brother Saml Washington” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 266).

Joseph Thompson paid £18 rent on this date, “By cash at my Brothr Saml Washington.” He had been renting a plantation in Frederick County from GW since 1766 (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 248).

On 23 Mar. 1770 GW paid William Crawford £12 on behalf of Samuel Washington (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 315).

James Craik visited Mount Vernon on 13 March. For the possible identity of the map, see William Crawford to GW, 5 May 1770, n.2.

James Craik and GW left on 2 Mar. for the meeting of the officers of the Virginia Regiment of 1754 in Winchester, arrived in Winchester on 4 Mar., and left for home on 11 Mar., reaching Mount Vernon on 13 March. GW’s diaries and the editors’ notes for these days provide full information about GW’s movements (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 3:12–14).

A photocopy of the 25 Feb. 1771 plat and survey of “the Waste and ungranted Land entered by George Washington in the Proprietor’s Office . . . found to contain by an actual Survey Twenty and an half Acres” on Dogue Run at Mount Vernon, in GW’s hand and signed by him, is in DLC:GW. A photocopy of the deed for the property, dated 4 Mar. and signed by Lord Fairfax and Thomas Bryan Martin, is in Northern Neck Grants, Book I, 187, Vi. See also The Growth of Mount Vernon, 1754–1786 (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 1:240–41).

While in Frederick County GW on 7 Mar. was at his “Brothers all day writing Instructions & dispatches for Captn. Crawford the Surveyor of our 200,000 Ac[re]s of Land.” He did not finish the task until 9 Mar., when he gave the “dispatches” to Crawford’s half brother, Marcus Stephenson (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 3:13). For indications of the contents of GW’s missing instructions to Crawford, see Minutes of the Meeting of the Officers of the Virginia Regiment of 1754, 5 Mar., and Crawford to GW, 20 April 1771.

GW wrote in his diary on 13 Mar. of “being obliged to Ferry over goose Creek at [John] Houghs Mill” in Loudoun County on his return home (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 3:14). The “Peyton’s” where GW stayed on the twelfth of course was not Yelverton Peyton’s ordinary on Aquia Creek in Stafford County where he frequently stopped on his way to Fredericksburg. GW must have been at the house of Yelverton Peyton’s brother, Col. Francis Peyton (d. 1781), a justice of Loudoun County, or one of his other brothers who lived in the area. Francis Peyton lived on the road to Vestal’s ferry.

“Talbots” may have been the place either of John Talbot (died c.1789) in Loudoun County, or of Benjamin, Daniel, or Samuel Talbot of Fairfax County, all of whom voted for GW in the 1768 election. See Fairfax County Poll Sheet, 1 Dec. 1768.

On 25 Feb. Benjamin Buckler, “late of the Provence of Maryland but now of Fairfax County in Virginia,” entered an agreement with GW to work for him as a carpenter from that date until 25 Dec. 1771 in return for the use of a house, 300 pounds of pork, 3 barrels of corn, and £25 current money (DLC:GW). Buckler signed with his mark.

After buying on 18 Dec. 1770 from Valinda Wade her half of an undivided 193–acre tract on Dogue Run at Mount Vernon, GW sought to buy the other half owned by her nephew William Barry or to secure the riparian rights to the stream for the mill that he was building. See editors’ note, in Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 2:331, and George William Fairfax to GW, 12 Mar. 1770, n.1. The nephew’s father, John Barry, refused to sell or to consent to a division of the property. At the Fairfax County court that met 18–22 Mar. 1771, GW registered the deeds that he had from Valinda Wade and retained two lawyers, Robert Hanson Harrison and William Ellzey, to bring suit against the Barrys to force a division of the Wade tract. When the case came to trial in August 1772, the court ordered the county surveyor to make the division that GW asked for (see Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 3:14–15, and Robert Hanson Harrison to GW, 10 Jan. 1772).

Thomas Lawson was the manager of John Tayloe’s Neabsco ironworks in Prince William County.

John Prescot was a cobbler. He had been doing work for GW since 1763 (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 170). GW paid £1.5 for Prescot’s “Making 20 pr Shoes” (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 223).

Joseph Soal, a shoemaker, was a tenant at Mount Vernon from as early as 1769 through 1770 (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 304).

This money was for Custis’s “going to Baltimore” (Guardian Accounts, 1 May 1771).

GW “lodgd” at Thomas Montgomerie’s house in Dumfries on 27 Mar. (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 3:16).
