To James Madison from William Brown, [ca. 20 July 1806] (Abstract)

From William Brown, [ca. 20 July 1806] (Abstract)

§ From William Brown.1 Ca. 20 July 1806. “Permit an old Soldier of ’76 to recommend through you to the President of the United States, Mr: Nicholas Newell, a Citizen, calculated in every respect to command our Revenue Cutter. He possesses a nice Sense of honor—is a republican, and a man of the most incorruptible integrity.”

RC (DNA: RG 59, LAR, 1801–9, filed under “Newell”). 1 p.; docketed by Wagner as received on 6 Aug. 1806. Undated; conjectural date assigned here based on comparison with Newell to JM, 18 July 1806, Richard Wall to JM, 22 July 1806, and John Brickell to Abraham Baldwin, 21 July 1806 (ibid.).

1William Brown served as a major in the Maryland Line of the Continental Army. He later owned a coffeehouse and a boardinghouse in Savannah (Savannah Georgia Gazette, 26 Feb. 1789; Augusta, Ga., Southern Centinel, and Gazette of the State, 12 Feb. 1795; Columbian Museum & Savannah Advertiser, 3 Apr. 1798).
