To James Madison from Nicholas Newell, 18 July 1806 (Abstract)

From Nicholas Newell, 18 July 1806 (Abstract)

§ From Nicholas Newell.1 18 July 1806, Savannah. “I have this day been directed by the Collector of this Port to take charge of the Revenue Cutter, Thomas Jefferson, until the pleasure of the President of the United States be known: I take the liberty of enclosing a copy of the Collector’s temporary appointment, and at the same time to request, that you will do me the honor of laying the Same before his Excellency the President. It will be the pride of my whole life to have received an appointment from the present administration, and if the Command of the Cutter of this Port is conferred upon me, I flatter myself with the hope that my conduct as an Officer in the discharge of the duties imposed upon me, will neither reflect dishonor upon myself nor discredit the choice of the government of my Country.”

RC and enclosure (DNA: RG 59, LAR, 1801–9, filed under “Newell”). RC 2 pp. The right-hand side of the enclosed note (1 p.), including part of the signature and text, is missing, but the 18 July 1806 date and enough of the text to identify the document remain.

1Nicholas Newell (d. 1809) was commander of U.S. revenue cutters at Savannah and Charleston until his death (Charleston City-Gazette and Daily Advertiser, 19 Jan. 1808; Newburyport Herald, 27 June 1809).
