1. The wife of Gen. Thomas Conway; for her relationship with BF see above, especially XXIV, 486–7. On April 18 her father-in-law, Count de Conway, called upon JA in the hope of some word about his son (Butterfield, John Adams Diary, II, 302–3). Perhaps she was with him, for her later letters send regards to Adams. As the summer wore on she became more and more desperate for news of her husband. Several appeals to BF, such as one via her father-in-law (below, July 23), brought no reply; and in September she turned to WTF. Rumor, she told him on the 8th, had it that the General was ill and that BF knew it; was that true? By the 16th she had heard nothing, and wrote again: had she still any ground for hope? WTF answered, but whatever he said did not calm her. By the 25th she had heard of Conway’s duel (XXV, 555 n) but was not sure of the outcome, “ou Le bonheur et Le malheur de ma vie sont attaché.” These three letters are in the APS.
