Dear Papa
I long to see you, and hope that you and sister Patsy are well; give my love to her and tell her that I long to see her, and hope that you and she will come very soon to see us. I hope you will send me a doll. I am very sorry that you have sent for me. I don’t want to go to France, I had rather stay with Aunt Eppes. Aunt Carr, Aunt Nancy and Cousin Polly Carr are here. Your most happy and dutiful daughter,

MS not found. Text printed from , p. 104, where it is printed without date, together with two other letters from Mary to her father before she left the Eppes home for France. This letter has been assigned to the present date because of the mention in the letter that “Aunt Carr” was at Eppington at this time (see entry for missing letter from Martha Jefferson Carr to TJ, this date), and because TJ made an entry of the receipt of a letter from “Polly” under date of 3 May 1787, the date he recorded the receipt of Mrs. Carr’s letter, together with those from John Wayles and Francis Eppes, all of this date.
