I have the honor to transmit, herewith enclosed, the original communications from the Secretary of the Government North West of the Ohio, and copies of his letters addressed to the late Secretary of Congress.1 With the greatest respect I have the honor to be Sir—Your most Obedient Humble Servant

1. Winthrop Sargent, the secretary of the Northwest Territory, wrote Charles Thomson on 1 July 1789. Alden’s endorsement of Sargent’s letter reads: “Letter July 1st 1789—Winthrop Sargeant—Secy of the Govt N: West of the Ohio transmitting his half yearly communications Recd Augt 20th 1789–Augt 25th 1789—transmitted a copy of this letter & the original papers enclosed to the President of the U:S” ( 2:198).
