Montmorin’s letter: see Enclosure i to first Memorandum to Washington, [11 July 1793]. The letter from Governor Thomas Chittenden of Vermont has not been found. The Letter from Algiers, transmitted to TJ by Washington on 16 July 1793, was addressed to Congressman Jonathan Trumbull, Jr., of Connecticut, by the American captives there (Washington, Journal description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed., The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797, Charlottesville, 1981 description ends , 200). Writing to the President in a letter of 8 July 1793 from Lebanon, Connecticut, Trumbull had forwarded it among certain “inclosed papers” respecting the captives that he deemed “of such a nature that I think it my duty to transmit them to the supreme Executive of the Union” (DNA: RG 59, MLR). None of the papers have been found.
