Being informed you have a much larger supply of oil than will shortly be necessary for your works and the Continent being distressed at their tannery here for that article, be so good as to lend Majr. Claiborne so much as he may want and you can spare, which he will replace. I am Sir Your very humble servt.,

RC (Vi); addressed by TJ: “Captn. Thomas Warwick”; endorsed. This letter was evidently sent to Richard Claiborne for transmission to Capt. Thomas, for below the text of TJ’s order is a note signed by Claiborne: “Captain Thomas will oblige Major Claiborne by delivering Mr. Parks, the Asst. Comy. of Hides at this place, the oil mentioned in the above order, and Charge it to the Comy. Genl. of hides, who will replace it.” See Claiborne to TJ, 13 Apr. 1781.
