RC (MHi); dateline beneath first signature; with ending of postscript in TJ’s hand; addressed: “Mr Thos Jefferson Montecelloe”; endorsed by TJ, with his additional notation: “7.56½.”

A stand is an “open tub” or “a barrel set on end” (OED description begins James A. H. Murray, J. A. Simpson, E. S. C. Weiner, and others, eds., The Oxford English Dictionary, 2d ed., 1989, 20 vols. description ends ).

On 28 Sept. 1821 TJ recorded paying Isaacs & Lee $11.95 for tallow and beef (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1379).

1Beneath signature TJ here wrote “.56.”
