Mr. Hamilton presents his respectful Compliments to Mr. Jefferson and requests to be favoured with a copy of his Report concerning the distillation of Fresh from Salt-Water.

RC (MH); endorsed by TJ as received 26 June 1792 and so recorded in SJL.

Hamilton requested a copy of TJ’s 21 Nov. 1791 Report on the Desalination of Sea Water so that he could comply with a joint resolution of Congress of 8 May 1792 directing the Secretary of the Treasury to provide United States collectors with printed clearance forms containing a description of methods used to extract fresh water from sea water in order to encourage their testing and use. The results were to be published in newspapers or communicated to the Secretary of State (JHR description begins Journal of the House of Representatives of the United States, Washington, D.C., 1826, 9 vols. description ends , i, 604–5; JS description begins Journal of the Senate of the United States, Washington, D.C., 1820–21, 5 vols. description ends , i, 443–4).
