From John Jay to Peter Augustus Jay, 18 March 1816

To Peter Augustus Jay

Bedford—18 March 1816.

Dear Peter

I have recd. your Letter of the 10 Inst:, but am yet uninformed whether mine of the 27 ult: to Maria, has come to her Hands.1 The Continuance of her Head Aches gives me the more Concern, as they render the Success of the Doctor’s Plan less certain than I had supposed— I think the Doctr. should be apprized of it, that he may alter or add to his Prescriptions, as he may think it adviseable. From what you say of John, I presume his Cough has left him. I wish he may be and continue free from it. We are all as well as usual—

In my opinion Mr. King did well in consenting to his Nomination, & I agree with you that strenuous Exertions should be made to secure his Election. Whatever may be the Result, it will afford some Data for ulterior Calculations.—

I am glad you have taken the Measure you mention relative to the Land in Scriba’s Patent sold for Taxes; and shall be glad to hear that all Difficulties on that head are conclusively settled.—

The Court House Business still excites Sollicitude here, and consequently will encrease good will towards some, and ill will towards others.— I think a Man must sink even in his own Esteem, who is willing to obey or to disobey his Sense of right, as his Party or his Purse shall direct him—

I have been reading a Dream in the Utica Paper, about the Interpretation of which it will not be necessary to consult astrologers or magicians. it appears to be of that class which do not soon “pass away”. it will probably be long remembered and often told, but not with equal Pleasure by all.—

Brittain is going to Staten Island— David Merrit to his Fathers—and F. Clark to New York— their Places have been supplied without Difficulty— Foster Clark who for a Year past has been our coachman, will go to live with his Father the 1st. of June next. I fear his place will not be easily supplied, and that we may be embarrassed— My Love to Maria & John— I am sorry Maria has not found a House or Lot to her Mind. It is desireable that she should be as conveniently and pleasantly situated & circumstanced as a due Regard to Expense may allow— Remember us to Caty— I am Dr Peter Your affte. Father

John Jay
