TJ presumably began compiling this document after receiving a copy of his account from Patrick Gibson in a missing letter of 24 Feb. 1820 received three days later. This letter advised TJ that Gibson could no longer extend credit for new expenses (see TJ to Gibson, 15 Mar. 1820, and note). In TJ’s Notes on his Account with Gibson, [ca. 22 May 1820], enclosed in TJ to Gibson, 22 May 1820, TJ indicated that the quarterly balance in Gibson’s hands as of 22 Feb. 1820 was 109.57 dollars. On 19 Mar. 1820 TJ received word that his balance in Gibson’s hands had increased to roughly $370 (John G. Robert [for Gibson] to TJ, 16 Mar. 1820).

TJ added his list of bank debts on or after 14 July 1820, and he evidently inserted dates and check marks at different times to indicate settlement of specific debts, with the amount paid generally increased to include interest (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends ).
