To John Jay from Rufus King, 25 August 1796

From Rufus King

London August 25. 1796

Dear Sir

All that I have yet seen here, corresponds with the information you gave ^us^ respecting the temper and inclinations of this Government— My own experience authorises no conclusions— The Commissioners on the part of G[reat]. B[ritain]. in the Capture Questions are as unexceptionable as we could have expected— they are both esteemed enlightened, candid, and honorable, men— our Commissioners are equally reputable; and the completion of the Board which this day took place, by a decision by lot in favor of our Countryman Colo. Trumbul, places this Business in a satisfactory Situation— It was not to have been expected that the Commissioners would agree in the fifth Man; next to this it was of great importance that they should agree on the two names to be thrown into the Urn— Our commissioners agreed to Doct. Swabry named by the british Commissioners, and they agreed to Col. Trumbull named by our commissioners—1

At present I perceive no reason to suppose that any Delays, which are improper will happen in the further progress of this important Business. With perfect Respect & Esteem I am Dr. Sir Your ob. Serv

Rufus King

P.S. Mr. Pinckney will embark in about four weeks—
