Trenton [N.J.] Septr 1. 1798.

Sir,

By William Craig Esqr. who left this place on the 22d ult. I remitted you fifteen hundred dollars, and left in Philadelphia two hundred dollars for Colo. C. Biddle; receipts are inclosed for both sums, being the seventeen hundred dollars paid me by Judge Addison for you. I gave the Judge my receipt for the same.1 I have the honor to be with great respect, sir, your most obt servt

1Copies of the two receipts in the hand of William Craik are in MHi: Pickering Papers. The first, dated 9 Aug., from Clement Biddle to Samuel Hodgdon, reads: “Please to pay Thomas Annesley Two hundred dollars left with you by Colo. Pickering to be paid me on Account of General Washington,” and is receipted on 18 Aug. by Thomas Annesley. The second, dated 21 Aug., from William Craik, reads: “Received of Timothy Pickering One thousand five hundred dollars which I am to deliver to General Washington at Mount Vernon.” See also Alexander Addison to GW, 11 July, Pickering to GW, 12 July, printed in a note to the Addison letter, and GW to Addison, 29 July. After receiving this letter of 1 Sept. from Pickering with its enclosures, GW sent to Pickering this receipt: “Received Septr 6th 1798. From Colo. Pickering, by the hands of William Craik Esqr. Fifteen hundred dollars; which with other two hundred dollars paid by him at my request to Colo. Clement Biddle is in full of Seventeen hundred dollars received by the said Pickering, on my A/c from Judge Addison, in part payment of a Bond given by Matthew Ritchie deceased to me, for land sold the said Ritchie in the County of Washington & State of Pennsylvania.
