Permit me to recommend to Your kind civilities the bearer of this the Revd C. Lowell of Boston a particular friend of mine of many years standing I shall be grateful for your goodness towards him

Charles Lowell (1782–1861), Congregational clergyman, was born in Boston. He attended Phillips Academy in Andover beginning in 1792 and graduated from Harvard University in 1800, after which he studied divinity in Edinburgh. Lowell was ordained as the minister of Boston’s West Church in 1806, a post he retained, with the aid of an assistant beginning in 1837, until his death in Cambridge. He published two volumes of sermons in 1855. Lowell’s involvement in numerous organizations included service to the Massachusetts Historical Society as recording secretary, 1818–33, and corresponding secretary, 1833–49, and to the American Antiquarian Society as a councillor, 1820–53 (Sprague, American Pulpit description begins William B.
