George Washington Papers

From George Washington to Colonel Josiah Parker, 29 May 1778

To Colonel Josiah Parker

Head Quarters Valley Forge May 29th 1778

Sir,

I cannot forbear expressing my astonishment, that you should have so far exceeded the time, limited for your return;1 I desire on receipt of this, you will instantly repair to camp.2 I am Sir Your hum. serv.

Df, in Alexander Hamilton’s writing, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW.

1Hamilton wrote and then marked out additional text at this place on the draft: “notwithstanding too, the season is so far advanced and you must be convinced your presence with your regiment is essentially necessary.”

2Parker returned to camp in early July (see Peter Muhlenberg to GW, 9 July).
