Approval of a Resolution by the City of Washington, 23 November 1812 (Abstract)

§ Approval of a Resolution by
the City of Washington

23 November 1812. “I approve the object … for which it is proposed to raise, by lottery, the sum of ten thousand dollars by the corporation of the City of Washington.”1

Printed copy (Records of the Columbia Historical Society 2 [1899]: 254).

1JM was responding to two resolutions passed by the Board of Aldermen and the Board of Common Council of the City of Washington on 19 Nov. 1812 to raise funds to build and endow two public schools “on the Lancastrian system.” A third resolution required the mayor of Washington to forward these resolutions to JM for his approval (ibid., 2:253–54).
