Mr. Howell1 verbally acknowledged himself to be the writer of the letter from which the extract was published in the Providence Gazette.2 At his instance the subject was postponed untill Monday.3

1JM inserted the last five letters of “Howell” long after he wrote the original draft of his notes.

3The information in JM’s record is not included in the printed journal for 13 December (JCC description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds., Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774–1789 (34 vols.; Washington, 1904–37). description ends , XXIII, 794–98). When David Howell admitted his authorship of the letter, he “averred the Facts therein Stated to be true, as could be shewn from the Letters etc. on the files of Congress” (Burnett, Letters description begins Edmund C. Burnett, ed., Letters of Members of the Continental Congress (8 vols.; Washington, 1921–36). description ends , VII, 8).
