William Robertson (1750–1829) trained as a merchant in Scotland but gave up trade as a young man. He held local offices in his native Prince George County during the American Revolution and was later a justice of the peace and county sheriff. In 1794 Robertson moved to Richmond, where he studied law and was licensed to practice in 1803. He served as clerk of the Virginia Council of State, 1811–20, and sat on the council himself, 1820–24 (Julian Hart Robertson and James Samuel Patton, The Family of William and Elizabeth Bolling Robertson of Richmond, Virginia, 1585–1981 [1981], 35, 76–101; Robertson diary and family papers at ICU; Richmond Chancery Court Will Book, 5:118; Richmond Enquirer, 19 Nov. 1829).
