Tabular MS (DLC); entirely in TJ’s hand. Without date.

These calculations of Virginia’s militia strength were obviously drawn up in preparation for the Advice of Council assigned to this date (preceding) and the letters to the County Lieutenants (following), for the data in all these documents closely correspond where they overlap. In DLC: TJ Papers, 6: 1069–70, are two other lists of the Virginia counties in TJ’s hand, apparently preliminary to the present paper, with the total militia strength of each county entered and containing numerous corrections; one of these tabulates the counties alphabetically and the other classifies them by location.

1The following (and also Albemarle, below) are merely the counties between Tidewater and the Blue Ridge not previously called on for militia in the southern campaign. In the second (or classified) preliminary list referred to above, Loudoun, Fauquier, Culpeper, and Albemarle are listed, together with all the counties from Pittsylvania to Henry in the list here printed, as “Between the Blue-ridge and Tide-waters.”
