John Jay Papers

From John Jay to William H. Sackett, 29 July 1816

To William H. Sackett

[[Bedford], 29 July 1816—]

Mr. Jay presents his Compts. to Doctr. Sackett— Dick went lately to N. York in the Expectation of being recd. and cured in the Hospital— The Doctors there, finding his Complaints to be a Fistula and an infection of the Lungs, were of the opinion— that if the Discharge from the Fistula was dried up, the other Disorder ^complaint in his Lungs^ might prove fatal;— that his Lungs ^and therefore that the latter^ should be cured, ^removed^ before an operation should be safely performed. That ^They observed that^ his Lungs could be more easily healed in the country than in the Hospital, where the Air is unfriendly to pulomonary complaints, & they advised him, after the Removal of his consumptive Symptoms, to return for a cure of the Fistula.

Shortly after his Return home, it was intimated to Mr. Jay that Doctr. Sackett thought he could cure Dick— Mr. Jay, thereupon advised him to apply to Doctr. Sackett; and added ^that^ if the Doctr. should cure him, Mr. Jay would engage for ^engage to^ ^pay^ a Part of the Expense— and he desired Chester to state these matters to the Doctr.—

Mr. Jay recd. last Evens the Doctor’s Letter of the 27 Inst:,1 and is glad to find that he does not consider Dick’s case as being hopeless. In Case a radical Cure should be effected, Mr. Jay will pay a certain fixed Sum towards the Expenses of it— what they would probably amount to, he is not in Capacity to ca[lcu]late2 or conjecture. If the Doctr. will be pleased to suggest his opinion on that head, Mr. Jay will immediately decide on the Sum for which he will be responsible— Dick on being restored to Health will be able, and doubtless be desirous to provide for the Paymt. of the Residue very thankfully—
