6David (XXV, 241) had served the Elector Palatine at the French Court since 1768: Repertorium der diplomatischen Vertreter, III, 304.

7The packet undoubtedly contained the fourth volume of the Transactions of the Palatine Academy of Sciences, which the abbé Jacob Hemmer had promised to send BF as soon as it was printed: XXVII, 457. The volume, he said, would include four of his essays on electricity. Hemmer’s note to BF, announcing the presentation of the “dernier volume physique de l’academie de Manheim,” is dated Manheim, Aug. 8, 1780, and written in French: APS.
