1. The Senate received this message from Tobias Lear this day and ordered it to lie for consideration after reading it. On 14 April the Senate considered the nomination and resolved to consent to the appointment ( 1:119–20). Lear informed Jefferson on 14 April of the Senate’s concurrence (DNA: RG 59, George Washington’s Correspondence with His Secretaries of State), and Rittenhouse’s commission as director of the U.S. Mint was filled out that day (DLC:GW).
