Sir,

Congress consider Genl McDougall’s Application worthy of Attention,1 & the better to enable your Excellency to comply, if you think proper with his Request have ordered a thousand Dollars to be forwarded to You—The enclosed is a Copy of the Order for that purpose.2 I have the Honor to be With the greatest Respect & Esteem Your Excellys most Obedt & Hble Servt

1. GW had conveyed Maj. Gen. Alexander McDougall’s request for money for intelligence operations in his letter to Jay of 19 Feb. (see also McDougall to GW, 11–15 Jan., and GW to McDougall, 9 Feb.).

2. The enclosure has not been identified. On 22 Feb., Congress ordered “That a warrant issue on the treasurer, in favour of the paymaster of the Board of War and Ordnance, for the sum of one thousand dollars in specie, to be by him forwarded to the Commander in Chief for secret service” (JCC description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789. 34 vols. Washington, D.C., 1904–37. description ends , 13:218).
