To Major General Israel Putnam

[Fredericksburg] 30 Sepr 1778

Dear sir

Since writing the inclosed I have some advices that the enemy are moving towards the Clove at Suffrens, you will immediately dispa[t]ch some horsemen to ascertain the fact1—I shall be at Fish kill Town this afternoon if you should have any intelligence to communicate. Sir I am &

1. GW apparently obtained this information, in part at least, from William Woodford’s letter to him of 29 Sept., which GW had received this morning (see GW to Woodford, this date). GW apparently had not yet received Putnam’s letter to him of 29 Sept., in which Putnam informs GW of the rumor regarding the British threat to Smith’s Clove and his decision to send a detachment there.
