1. No report of this court of inquiry has been identified, but apparently it had no serious consequences for Capt. John Wiley’s military career, since he was promoted to major of the 8th Massachusetts Regiment in December 1779 and continued serving until he resigned his commission in January 1781. Charles Proud of Philadelphia had enlisted for the war in Col. John Lamb’s Continental artillery regiment in March 1777. He became a gunner in September 1777 and was injured later that fall during the action at Fort Mifflin, Pa., when a cannon carriage ran over his leg. Proud, nevertheless, continued serving as a gunner in Lamb’s regiment until January 1781, when his company was transferred to Col. John Proctor’s 4th Continental Artillery. In August 1783 Proud was listed as a private in a company of Pennsylvania invalid guards.
