My last trouble was under the 27th Ulto by Messenger Barry.

Your Excellency’s favor of the 31st together with Genl Foremans memorial came to hand last night, I presented it to Congress & the Subject matter will be taken under consideration this Morning.

Inclosed your Excellency will find an Act of Congress for appointing a Major Genl under Your Excellency’s direction to proceed with Marquis delafayette on the intended expedition into Canada.1 I have the honour to be &ca.

LB, DNA:PCC, item 13. A note on the manuscript indicates that the letter was sent “⅌ Marquis,” that is, by Lafayette.

1. Congress resolved on 2 Feb. to inform GW that it was willing to appoint either Maj. Gen. Alexander McDougall or Johann Kalb to serve under Lafayette on the Canadian expedition (JCC description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789. 34 vols. Washington, D.C., 1904–37. description ends , 10:107); in the event Kalb would be chosen because of McDougall’s ill health.
