1. Leedstown, in King George County in 1763, was on the Rappahannock River between Fredericksburg and Hobbs Hole. Little Ferry crosses Upper Machodoc Creek on the road from the lower Northern Neck to Hooe’s ferry.

2. This must have been GW’s cousin Lawrence Washington (1728–c.1809) of Chotank, who lived on a bluff overlooking the Potomac near Chotank Creek in Stafford County. GW was attending the organizational meeting of the Mississippi Land Company. See source note, Mississippi Land Company: Articles of Agreement, 3 June 1763.

3. GW crossed into Maryland on Hooe’s ferry from Mathias Point, Va., to Lower Cedar Point, Maryland. John Hooe (1704–1766) operated the ferry.

4. Jenifer was probably Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer (1723–1790) who lived on his estate called Stepney in Charles County, Maryland.

6. Sampson Trammell’s house “abt. 2 Miles above the Falls Church” was on the road from Alexandria to Leesburg (Diaries description begins Donald Jackson and Dorothy Twohig, eds. The Diaries of George Washington. 6 vols. Charlottesville, Va., 1976–79. description ends , 4:1).

7. Thomas Speake was sheriff of Frederick County where GW had his Bullskin plantation.
