Docr Julius R Shumate1 has been particularly recommended by Mr. Love2 of the House of Representatives for the appointment of Surgeon’s Mate in the Navy—& his services are now wanted at New orleans. I have the honor to be with great respect sir yr mo ob st.

1. On 27 Dec. JM nominated Shumate, a resident of Culpeper County, Virginia. The Senate confirmed his appointment on 3 Jan. 1810, and he served until 1812 (Senate Exec. 2. John Love (d. 1822), an Alexandria Republican, represented Fauquier County in the Virginia House of Delegates, 1805–7, and the district composed of Loudoun, Prince William, and Fairfax counties in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1807–11. He served as a state senator, 1816–20 (Swem and Williams, Register description begins Earl G. Swem and John W.
