From James Madison to James Davidson Jr., 17 November 1804 (Abstract)

§ To James Davidson Jr.

17 November 1804, Department of State. “Until a more perfect statement of the sums payable under the 7th Article of the British Treaty can be completed, I request you will be pleased to make payment upon the orders of Mr. Christopher S. Thom, taking a blank receipt upon each order, and preserving it with the power of Attorney, if any, on which the payment is made.”1

1On 28 Nov. 1804 JM wrote Albert Gallatin requesting that he “advance to James Davidson Jnr. Cashier of the Office of Discount and Deposit in this City, the sum of Twenty thousand dollars, to enable him according to the arrangements, concerted with that office, to pay the claims of the persons on whose awards, by the Commissioners under the 7th. Art. of the British Treaty, payments have been received by Mr. Erving, the Agent of claims in London” (DNA: RG 59, DL, vol. 14).
