Thomas Jefferson Papers

To Thomas Jefferson from Benjamin Bankson, 30 September 1793

From Benjamin Bankson

Philadelphia, September 30th. 1793.

Sir

The inclosed Letters and papers from Mr. Dumas were received last Wednesday—a number of French News papers and a pamphlet accompanied them, which I have retained agreeably to your instructions.

The Letter with Mr. Genet’s name on the outside was taken from the post office last Saturday, and is the only one from any of the foreign Ministers that has come to my hands.

I did not receive an answer from Genl. Moylan until the 25th. on which day the Express I had sent returned with one, a copy of which is enclosed. I immediately forwarded a Letter to Major Lenox whose residence is about 10 miles from the City—and expect his answer to morrow.

The Documents to accompany Mr. Morris’ Letter I hope to finish this day, and shall exert myself in finding an opportunity to transmit them—none as yet has offered. Not a word from any of the Gentlemen of the Office since your departure. I have the honor to be with great respect Sir, your most Obed servt.

Benjn. Bankson

NB: Fenno did not print last week.

RC (DLC); at foot of text: “Th: Jefferson Esq.”; endorsed by TJ as received 2 Dec. 1793 and so recorded in SJL. Enclosures: (1) C. W. F. Dumas to TJ, 1 May 1793 (two letters). (2) Dumas to TJ, 22 June 1793 (recorded in SJL as received 2 Dec. 1793, but not found). (3) Stephen Moylan to Benjamin Bankson, Goshen, 25 Sep. 1793, declining a commission as federal marshal for the district of Pennsylvania and noting that a letter he had written on 20 Sep. explaining his decision was not forwarded by his brother because of the “fatal disorder prevailing in the City” (Tr in DLC; in Bankson’s hand).

The letter with Edmond Charles Genet’s name on the outside must have been one of those the French minister wrote on 24 or 27 Sep. 1793. Later this day Bankson wrote a brief note to David Lenox enclosing his commission as “marshal for Pennsylvania District” in response to a 28 Sep. letter from him accepting the appointment (Tr in DLC; in Bankson’s hand). Documents to accompany Mr. Morris’ letter: presumably the enclosures to TJ’s 16 Aug. 1793 letter to Gouverneur Morris requesting Edmond Charles Genet’s recall.
