Report on Tonnage for the Year Ending September 30, 1792, [18 February 1794]

Report on Tonnage for the Year Ending
September 30, 1792

[Philadelphia, February 18, 1794]1 This report consists of fourteen statements of the tonnage of vessels entering the United States from foreign ports as well as the tonnage of coasting and fishing vessels for the year ending September 30, 1792.2

ASP description begins American State Papers, Documents, Legislative and Executive, of the Congress of the United States (Washington, 1832–1861). description ends , Commerce and Navigation, I, 254–64.

1There is some confusion concerning the date of this document. The separate statements for the tonnage entering each state from foreign ports as well as the summary statement for the United States are signed by Tench Coxe and dated January 21, 1794. At that time H was not ready to submit them to the Senate. see H to John Adams, February 6, 1794.

On February 18, 1794, “The Vice President laid before the Senate a letter from the Secretary for the department of Treasury, together with fourteen statements of tonnage, for a year ending the 30th of September, 1792, according to the entries of vessels in the United States during that period” (Journal of the Senate, 3rd Cong., 1st Sess. description begins Journal of the Senate of the United States of America, Being the First Session of the Third Congress, Begun and Held at the City of Philadelphia, December 2d, 1793. And in the Eighteenth Year of the Sovereignty of the Said United States (Philadelphia: Printed by John Fenno, Printer to the Senate of the United States [1794]). description ends , 52). H’s communicating letter has not been found.

2This report was for the fiscal year which ended September 30, 1792, rather than for the year ending on June 30 as requested by the Senate. see H to John Adams, February 6, 1794.
