Report on Tonnage for the Year Ending
September 30, 1792
[Philadelphia, February 18, 1794]1 This report consists of fourteen statements of the tonnage of vessels entering the United States from foreign ports as well as the tonnage of coasting and fishing vessels for the year ending September 30, 1792.2
Commerce and Navigation, I, 254–64.
,1. There is some confusion concerning the date of this document. The separate statements for the tonnage entering each state from foreign ports as well as the summary statement for the United States are signed by Tench Coxe and dated January 21, 1794. At that time H was not ready to submit them to the Senate. see H to John Adams, February 6, 1794.
On February 18, 1794, “The Vice President laid before the Senate a letter from the Secretary for the department of Treasury, together with fourteen statements of tonnage, for a year ending the 30th of September, 1792, according to the entries of vessels in the United States during that period” ( , 52). H’s communicating letter has not been found.
2. This report was for the fiscal year which ended September 30, 1792, rather than for the year ending on June 30 as requested by the Senate. see H to John Adams, February 6, 1794.
