6. Two copies of the enclosure are at the Library of Congress. One is in WTF’s hand and he certifies it to be a true copy. The other is in L’Air de Lamotte’s hand and is immediately below his copy of the present letter in the legation letterbook. Both copies are dated July 11 and indicate Jackson signed the now-missing original. The former reads, “His Excellency Benjamin Franklin Esq. having directed the Money which was sent by M. Necker to Amsterdam for the purpose of being embarked there, on Acct of the United States, to be stopped and to be applied otherwise in Europe—in Compliance with his positive Instructions signified to me by Letter, and communicated by him to Congress, I withdraw Mr. Neckers Order to Messrs. Fizeau & Co.” The latter is similar. During this visit Jackson must also have seen JA, as on July 11 JA wrote Congress from Paris and said Jackson would convey the letter (undoubtedly aboard the South Carolina when he returned): Wharton, Diplomatic Correspondence, IV, 560. On July 23 BF had Ferdinand Grand send Jackson 130 louis (3,120 l.t.) via Fizeaux, Grand & Cie.: Account XXVII (XXXII, 4). This undoubtedly was for his travel expenses; BF on July 10, above, complained to Jackson that he had advanced him 120 louis for that purpose during his previous visit.
