2In WTF’s hand.

3The next day WTF, on behalf of his grandfather, wrote JW to ask if he was acquainted with William Williams or his family, and enclosed a letter from the self-proclaimed nephew to BF. JW replied on June 10 from Rouen, where he had met a man who had dined at Le Havre with this other Williams. Williams’ letter to BF, JW observed, gave no information about himself, asking only if BF knew a Col. Williams, not saying that he was his father or his grandfather, nor even if he was related to him. JW added “if he ever was an Inhabitant of Boston, he takes Date since my Departure, and I believe he is a Scoundrel.” He promised to write Andrew Limozin (XXIII, 234n) at Le Havre for more information. (Both letters are at the APS.)
