Head Quarters Middle Brook 24th April 1779.
Dear Sir
I have your favr of the 15th instant stating your claim of superior Rank to Lieut. Colo. Hubley. Should you have any thing further to urge be pleased to let me have it as soon as possible, if not, I shall look upon your letter of the above date sufficient to lay before a Board of Officers in support of your claim.
It will give me great pleasure to hear that you have a prospect of the re-establishment of your health after your long illness, being Dear Sir Yr most obt Servt.1

1. Connor replied from Philadelphia on 13 May: “I have been honored with Your Excellencys letter of the 24. ult. in answer to mine on the subject of Lieut. Col. Hubly’s claim; I shall not trouble Your Excellency with any thing farther on that, only wait the decision of the Board of officers in which I mean to acquiesce.
“I have now, thank God, hopes that my health is verging towards a reestablishment, as I am recovering some power of motion in those parts that have been affected with the Paralysis. My physicians advise me to try the use of the warm springs in Virginia which they seem to think may produce salutary effects” (DLC:GW). A Board of General Officers appointed by GW considered this rank dispute and decided in favor of Lt. Col. Adam Hubley, Jr.; see General Orders, 27 May, n.1.
