MS (DLC: TJ Papers, 218:38957); written in TJ’s hand on verso of a small scrap, attached with wax to covering letter, containing a portion of a note by the Charlottesville merchant John B. Benson: “J. B. Benson pres[ents his?] Compliments to Tho[. . .]”; undated.

carter’s bridge was located in Albemarle County on the Hardware River roughly ten miles south of Monticello (Woods, Albemarle description begins Edgar Woods, Albemarle County in Virginia, 1901, repr. 1991 description ends , 71–2). The raleigh was an ordinary situated just west of Buckingham Court House (buck. c.h) (MB description begins James A. Bear Jr. and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, 1997, 2 vols., The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1161n). len. bol’s was the home of Lenaeus (Linnaeus) Bolling in Buckingham County.
